If there is one thing that differentiates us humans from other species, then it is the use of language. Humans have always been able to communicate effectively using semiotics or linguistics. But other species of living organisms like insects or animals are not as fortunate. They have always relied on alternative methods of communication. Pheromones are one of them. Pheromones are naturally occurring chemicals that trigger behavioral responses from other members of the same species. There are myriad types of pheromones like alarm pheromones, trail pheromones (used commonly by ants) and food pheromones. But none of these have gained as much popularity as sex pheromones. Sex pheromones are commonly used by insects and animals for different reasons. A female may secrete a pheromone that indicates her availability for mating. Some insects are said to detect the presence of a potential mate from as far as 10 miles away courtesy pheromones. On the other hand, a male may secrete a pheromone that reveals information about the genotype.

Pheromones in Humans

The prevalence and usage of pheromones in humans has always been a topic of debate. Human pheromones have always been advertised by companies and fantasized by millions as the perfect attractant. A drop of synthesized isolated male pheromone is said to make a woman go weak in her knees. This alone can be a huge motivator for millions of males in the world. But is it for real? In order to know more about this, we need to take a peek into human anatomy. Scientists have attributed the effectiveness of pheromones in general to an organ known as Vomeronasal organ or VNO. It is also known as Jacobson's organ. The key function of the VNO is to detect specific chemical compounds within scents particularly pheromones. When the VNO detects a pheromone, it sends a signal to the brain which triggers a behavioral response as per the type of pheromone secreted. But the development of the VNO in mammals is known to regress during the fetal stage itself. The presence of the VNO in adult humans is much debated and is considered to be controversial. However, several studies have been conducted on this topic in the last few decades. Some of these studies have proved that a structure in the septal mucosa inside the nasal septum opens from the VNO pit.

The current scenario

Several independent studies have been carried out at different locations in the world. Some of these studies have revealed that human pheromones do exist and have a profound behavioral effect on both heterosexuals as well as homosexuals. Apart from an increased level of confidence, pheromones have also triggered a natural attraction towards the opposite partner. In simple terms, it can make you more attractive.
