What is Your Business Card Trying to Do?

I’ve noticed a trend where people will look at something like another person’s printed business card and start giving them advice on what they should or shouldn’t have done. This might results in them saying the person needs more visuals, less words, or maybe a description of their company. This leads to all sorts of different possible changes, but it also overlooks a very important detail: what was the person trying to do business card printing begin with.


This is important because it shows who the business card is aimed at and what the job of that particular business card is going to be. No, all business cards don’t serve the exact same purpose, but often people assume they do, and so they don’t consider what they’re trying to do with their business cards, something that greatly limits them.


To elaborate say you plan to print business cards before an upcoming event of some kind. Your company is currently working on a specific marketing push, and so you decide to alter your business cards to reflect this. You leave off a lot of the information you did have on the card about yourself and add to it instead information on the sale. When people walk away with your business card they won’t know that much about you anymore, but they will know about the sale instead.


If you’re looking at business cards from the perspective that they have to advertise you at all times, these kinds of color business cards that focus mainly on the sale will be viewed as ineffective. They aren’t really pushing you anymore, but that wasn’t what they were trying to do. They might be very effective at getting people to learn about your sale, and since people are more likely to keep business cards with them, you’ll get them to take home this important sales information.


From that perspective you were completely successful with your cards, because they served the purpose they were supposed to.


Business cards can accomplish far more than just contact information. I find it rather disheartening how often I see people who believe that you can only do one thing when you print business cards, because they’re failing to see the real potential they have open to them.


Your business card is always going to be whatever you want it to be, just be certain you know what that is. Business cards that are trying to do too many things at once, or have a mixed message won’t serve you very well. Before you get any business card printing done be sure you know exactly what your business card is trying to do and make sure you accomplish it to the best of your abilities.
