There are many varied types of depression. Without realizing it or accepting it, many Americans suffer from some sort of depression. Studies estimate that at least 14 million Americans suffer from depression. It is also estimated that less than a third of those affected will ever seek treatment. Why would people with a medical condition not seek help? Perhaps it is because depression is classified as a mental illness. That label is one people tend to avoid. There was a time in our history when those who suffered mental illness were shunned by society. When depression became apparent in people they were often sent away to clinics for the mentally ill. Fortunately times have changed. But what hasn't changed are old stereotypes. This motivates many people to hide their condition from others or even from themselves.

Depression is caused by many factors. It isn't easy to diagnose. Many things have to be considered such as genetics, biology and even outside influences. Depression can stem from drug or alcohol abuse, or even from simple everyday stress. Depression can come from all of these elements. In what ways can those who suffer from depression be treated? Just as there are many factors that can cause depression-there are many options to cure it as well. It comes down to a case by case consideration as to which options are best for someone who suffers depression

A lot of claimed cures for depression exist. A cure for depression is realistic when safe and effective treatments are considered. When considering which option is best there are a few considerations that must be examined. Is the treatment proven clinically to be effective for depression? If it is medication, herbal or prescription, does it have the proven amount of ingredients to induce a positive result? Has the method been tested under an appropriate level of scientific method? Some of the most popular treatments deserve a look.

For years the typical treatment for many forms of depression has been prescription drugs and psychotherapy. Prescription anti-depressants like SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are often prescribed as a treatment for depression. In 1988 Prozac was first used and today it is one of the most popular. Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox are just some of those that followed it. All of these work. But side effects are common, including causing more depression. Becoming more common are natural treatments. St Johns Wort extract is one herbal cure gaining popularity quickly. It must have between three and five percent hyperforin to work. It's success rate is similar to that of Prozac but with fewer side effects. Seeking a cure is important, but so is convincing people to get help. Seek medical care at once if you or a loved one suffer from depression.
