What To Look For When Purchasing Office Furniture

By: Jeremy Foster

Traditionally there were two types of offices: hard-walled with windows and interior modular cubicles. Today’s companies are frequently looking for the happy medium, and more and more people are deciding to start their own home-based businesses. The variety of styles and function of office furniture has multiplied in recent years in response to these demands. When you are looking to purchase office furniture there are two main things that need to be taken into consideration. The first is the amount of space that you have available, and the second is what you need the furniture to accomplish.

When searching for the perfect desk, the size of your working area is vital and you should measure your work space before deciding on a desk. The size of the desk will inevitably dictate the style. Do you have the space for a table-style long desk; or, will you need more of a compact style such as a two-tier half-oval desk? Will you only need room to key in information on a laptop or keyboard; or, should you have additional desk space to fill out paper work? Do you need to keep files or paperwork within your desk or at an arm’s reach? If you are purchasing office furniture for your home, you may want a style that will blend in with your décor while maintaining functionality like a tempered glass-top computer desk or a white-washed solid wood work center. Do you even need a desk? Maybe you only need a computer table.

If you need or have tons of books and binders, then perhaps you should consider an office suite, which is a desk with additional pieces, like a hutch; or possibly try a desk with additional storage cabinets or an overhead compartment. These office furniture combinations can range in price but may be a pit pricey for small or start up businesses and may require more space than allotted. Many stores offer modular furniture systems that you can customize and build onto later when you budget allows. Another solution would be to purchase a separate bookcase.

Will you need an additional filing cabinet? If so, how big do you need it to be? Some file cabinets resemble and occupy about as much space as an end table or night stand. But, they only work well when you do not have a lot of files. These may also provide ample surface space to accommodate additional books, binders, paper organizers, or a small fax, printer, or copier. If you have minimal space, but need to hold a significant number of files, you may consider purchasing a tall, but thin 5-drawer lateral filing cabinet.

Tables are a good way to stay on top of your organization with a classic look and simple design. There are tables to fit both small and spacious areas as well as nested and folding designs that allow you to conveniently expand and contract surface space depending on the project or meeting at hand. And you can pick from a more tradition look and feel, like a wood-finish training room table, or you can choose a more stylish and modern table, such as a large metallic nesting table set or a height-adjustable, split-level drafting table.

Choosing your office chair will depend on your personal needs and size. There are ergonomic chairs to maintain comfort and reduce strain. If you are seeking a traditional professional office chair, then you may lean toward an executive styled chair. Office chairs come in almost every color and style imaginable.

Although size and functionality play a role in the office furniture that you choose, there are other things to take into consideration as well. For many businesses, especially in today’s economy, a huge factor in office furniture will be the price. If you know where to look, you will be able to great deals on office furniture. There are discount furniture stores online that often sell similar if not the same office furniture as more expensive outlet chains or traditional office furniture stores.

Another important factor to consider is the durability of the office furniture. It is important that the furniture is able to withstand you and your workload. Office furniture that is of poor quality will not be able to hold up over a long period of time. And, having to purchase office furniture frequently will cost you more in the long run.

Believe it or not, the style of the furniture is also important. Your office furniture will speak volumes about your personality and your business. It is important for some professions to seek more traditional designs, such as those in the financial or legal industries. Those with more creative occupations should feel free to let their office furniture display their creativity, by choosing modern or retro designs and by picking vibrant colors.

There are numerous ways and reasons to decide on office furniture, but be sure that you take the factors most critical to your business into consideration. Shop for furniture that is both within your budget and functional at the same time. And then, be sure to do your research, in order to get the best long term bang for your buck and your business.
