How to Succeed in Business: Make Mistakes Fast
In the old days, the standard approach to succeed in business was to learn all you could before you went into the business world. You would finish college, do an internship and then you would be on your own to open your own business, a master of your field. However, business moved slower then. With each new technology, business moves a little bit faster. When the Internet became popular, business began to move at the speed of light, constantly changing. Now, if you want to succeed in business, you do not have time to spend years learning how best to run your company and how to sell your product. By the time you get it started, the business world will have long left you behind.
It has always been true that the best lessons are learned through your mistakes. In order to succeed in business in today’s fast-paced world, you have to open your business before you have learned everything you can. Open your business, make your mistakes, and learn from the feedback to make your business better. If you are lucky, you will hit on the right formula right out of the box. If you do, you can become successful beyond your wildest dreams.
Evolve your Business with the Times
Even a well-established business will make mistakes. With evolving technology and consumer tastes, you must constantly shift your focus and products or services to meet the rapidly changing needs of your customers. If you wait until you learn all about the new product or service before you offer it, the opportunity may pass you by and you will be left with a product that is out of style. To succeed in business, you must be willing to take risks. Some of those risks will pay off and others will not. However, people rarely remember your failures unless they are catastrophic (think New Coke). Move on, learn what you can, and apply your newfound knowledge to the next venture, but do not wait too long or the lesson will be outdated.
For companies like Hewlett Packard and Canon, they make 80% of their profits from products that are less than two years old. This is living proof of just how fast the business world moves, particularly in the technology sector. Have these companies had failures? Certainly—new ideas for radical changes to products do not always work out. Whirlpool tried to revolutionize washing machines with the Calypso washer, which failed miserably due to some major design flaws. However, the company is still thriving and innovating. It is their willingness to take risks and put their products on the market before anyone can beat them to it that helps them to succeed in business.
Do not get stuck in the old, slow way of opening a business or new product line if you want to succeed. In business, there is too much competition to risk staying behind. The tortoise cannot beat the hare any longer.
