More Than Just Information

Business cards are a form of marketing.

There, I said it, and I stand by my claim.

What I want to know is why so many people seem to argue against this idea so much and so often. They just keep on getting business card printing done where they don’t put anything on their card other than information.

Ask yourself this: what would you think about a brochure that only had a companies name and maybe listed the details about one sale? It tells you what time the sale is, where it is, and what the savings are, all in a normal font. No words are larger than any others, and everything is completely plain and uniform.

Or use this example with a postcard instead. You get one in the mail that only has the company name and a few minor details along with it. Are you even going to notice the postcard? I have a feeling it will end up in the trash within seconds without anyone really taking the time to look at it.

This is exactly what you’re doing with your business card printing each time you fail to turn it into the true marketing vehicle that it is. This isn’t just about contact information or anything so simple as that.

What good is giving someone a way of contacting you if you don’t give them any reason to contact you? This is what is at the heart of this issue, and what gets overlooked so often.

A real business card has two different goals, not one. The first is to get a person to remember who you are. The second is to give them a way of getting into contact with you. Is your name alone enough to get you remembered? You might think so, but after years of experience sifting through piles of business cards, I have to tell you, the name alone doesn’t mean much.

Maybe you have that much better of a memory than me, but I have a feeling I’m not alone in this. If someone doesn’t give me a helping hand in remembering them by adding a picture to their business cards or some other distinguishing feature, I’m going to forget who they are.

This is the truth when it comes to pretty much any business card. And the thing of it is, this isn’t very hard to take care of. You can quite easily add some additional personality to your business card if you just take the time to figure out different details about yourself to add to it that will help people remember you.

Don’t let your business cards turn into nothing more than a source of contact information. Give people something to latch onto, something to help them remember who you are, and you’ll find your business cards start helping you out a lot more than they did before.
