Those who are familiar with the internet definitely must have heard about affiliate marketing. In an affiliate program you have a website owner and an online merchant. They both enter into a revenue sharing agreement. On the basis of this agreement, the website owner places advertisements on his/her websites to sell the merchant's products and services. In return for that he/she earns a commission. Now the commission could be several dollars to few cents.

Affiliate marketing is very profitable provided that you know what it is and how it works. So first let us learn how you earn through an affiliate program. There are three ways by which an affiliate program can pay you. First one is called the pay per click program. Under this program you will be paid every time a visitor on your site clicks on the link which will lead him/her to the merchant's site. Depending on the program, you can be paid some cents or dollars for every click that leads to the merchant's site.

Many affiliate marketing programs pay per sale. In other words, every time a visitor on your site clicks on the merchant's link and then goes on to make a purchase on the merchant's site, you will be paid a commission. This commission will be deposited in your account.

There are affiliate marketing programs that will pay per lead. This means that every time a visitor from your site goes to the merchant's site and registers at the site, you will be paid a certain amount. This amount is predetermined, that means you would have agreed to this amount when you contracted to join the program.

As you can see affiliate marketing is a great way to earn some extra money. Many people earn more than just extra money. They earn more than they have ever earned. Many even leave their jobs to focus fulltime on their affiliate programs. Here I must add a word of caution. Affiliate program is a great way to earn money but it is not an easy way. You should not be under the impression that you can earn money by simply doing nothing. You will have to devote at least four to five hours everyday. Plus you have to be creative and innovative in your marketing techniques.

Now you know that affiliate marketing is not that easy. However, before you go and join an affiliate program there are some pitfalls that you must avoid. Before joining a program, you must do some research about the merchant. There have been some cases where merchants have simply folded up their business without informing the affiliates. Such cases are rare but you should always be alert.

You must also understand that affiliate marketing will get the cash in your account, but you will have to be patient. Sometimes it takes months for the results to show. So do not give up. Your constant efforts will earn you rich dividends sooner or later.
