Diabetes mellitus overview

There are several types of diabetes known today. One of this types is the diabetes mellitus, that is a glucose disorder. This type of diabetes is also characterized by sensibility to ketoacidosis, when insulin therapy is absent. Diabetes mellitus affects mostly Caucasians and it is a genetically auto immune condition. Ever since researchers have started to study the genetical side of this diabetes type, they have focused mainly on identifying the loci that are associated with the increased sensibility to this phenotype, that is multi factorial.

The phenotype of this particular diabetes type is polyuria, polydipsia and polyphagia. These result from secondary thirst and induced hyperglycemia. The result of this disorders are long lasting complications that ultimately affect your eyes, nerves, blood vessels and your kidneys. Diabetes mellitus is a medical term that is not that well defined , resulting in a lack of accord on the diagnosis criteria, thing that makes genetic analysis very difficult. The clinical classification that is given to this particular form of diabetes is into two main types of primary illness, the insulin dependent type of diabetes, the non dependent insulin type of diabetes and secondary types linked to medical disorders or gestation.

In order for the diabetes mellitus phenotype to appear, it is thought that a predisposing background is required. Together with this genetic background, an interaction with some factors of the environment is also believed to be the cause of diabetes mellitus. In the year 1978, scientists said that diabetes mellitus has at leas two forms: B8 associated from, that is characterized by the auto immunity of your pancreas and the B15 type of diabetes mellitus, that is characterized by the antibodies response to insulin. Ten years after this first discovery, another theory was brought to the surface concerning diabetes mellitus. Scientists then said that after some intense studies, it was shown that people suffering from diabetes mellitus, in which after a period of time, diabetic nephropathy develops, are genetically predisposed to hypertension.

Diabetes can affect both children and older people. In children, diabetes mellitus has an abrupt onset and it is characterized by big insulin frequency and auto antibodies. In adults, diabetes mellitus acts exactly the opposite. Diabetes mellitus has a slow onset and it is mostly non dependent to insulin, especially at the time of the diagnose.

Hyperglycemia is the main abnormality when it comes to diabetes mellitus. It is caused by increased glucogenesis and the insufficient disposal of glucose.
