Corrosion Under Insulation

By: Eric Minden

When moisture has time to build up in walls or machinery, the insulation in the wall or machine
becomes wet, since the insulation is unable to dry out, the product that the insulation is
covering may begin to corrode. When metal becomes wet and stays wet for a period of time, it
will become very weak, which in turn could cause it to buckle and become useless.

While insulation helps conserve energy it is is simultaneously speeding up the corrosion process.
This comes as a major threat to those who work in petroleum production, chemical processing,
and even food processing industries. Although corrosion under insulation cannot be prevented but
the risks can be reduced. Because corrosion under insulation can occur under any type of insulation
it is best to use insulation that will hold very little amounts of moisture and dry quickly.

Therefore it is best to avoid insulation products that have annular spaces or crevices for
retention of water and corrodes, the product should not have wicks, should not absorb water,
and any product that may contribute to corrosive contaminants should also be avoided. Choosing
the right insulation made of the right materials is crucial if you want to ward off
corrosion for as long as possible.

There are three things that are present before corrosion occurs.

-Moisture
-Chemical Content of the moisture
-Temperature

The dissolved oxygen content of water will create corrosion potential, meaning as the water
increases from the temperature the corrosion threats will also increase. This water can come from
any source either inside or outside of the insulation.

The chemical content of the water causes problems on stainless steel. The moisture will cause
pitting and corrosion of the steel. The chemicals come from the insulation itself if it is
retaining moisture.

When the temperature changes where the insulation is used, moisture can build up in the insulation
itself. Since the insulation is unable to dry out, the result is corrosion.

When you are looking for that right insulation to use, you should not go by the brand of the
insulation, but where you are going to use it. If you are experiencing a corrosion problem, you
should contact Corrosion and Thermal Solutions, as we are here to help rid your plant of that
corrosion nuisance.
