Cool To Be Cuil

By now you should have heard about the ingenious development and deployment of the internet’s newest search engine; Cuil.com

Launched June 26th, 2008, Cuil simply defines itself as “the world’s biggest search engine”. Quite a big statement but yet understandable when you realize the site was create by ex-Google employees. Cuil notes on their home page that they search over 121 billion sites which is three times as many as Google.com searches.

More important the number of sites that Cuil searches, indexes and caches; how does one get their site to rank on Cuil?

This answer can be partially gathered by visiting Cuil.com itself. As noted on their site, “Cuil searches for and ranks pages based on their content and relevance. When we find a page with your keywords, we stay on that page and analyze the rest of its content, its concepts, their inter-relationships and the page’s coherency”.

That is definitely a lengthy sentence; however it sounds very similar to the ways that search engines worked a few years back. Back when there was no such thing as “page rank” or how many inbounds links a site had, or how popular a site was within the Web 2.0 community. Although Cuil is telling us what they want, it’s hard for me to believe that it is simply this basic of a search engine as a few tests of mine have made me turn my head in confusion like a lost puppy dog.

Rather than reverse engineering Cuil.com to understand or at least attempt to understand its search algorithms, we need to wait and see what happens. What I simply mean by this is, do not bust your ahead against the wall because your site is not ranking on Cuil. Time will tell us all we need to know.

In the mean time what we can do is make sure Cuil has our site(s) information. Cuil has a nifty section within their site for webmasters in which you can submit your site. This link can be found at http://www.cuil.com/info/contact_us/feedback.php?to=crawl%20me

After you submit your site to their crawler named “Twiceler”, you can set up your robots.txt file if you feel it necessary.

I encourage you to perform your own testing on meta tags, meta tag relevancy, content, content relevancy and meta tag to content relevancy. No one can tell you exactly what Cuil wants from your site.....
