Controversy Still Follows Professional Wrestling

Professional wrestling is a very popular phenomenon with children of all ages. However, in recent years parents are finding that certain wrestling is becoming offensive and disturbing. Many have even banned their children from watching professional wrestling on television. Is all the fuss justified, or is professional wrestling really just a soap opera for boys?

Everyone knows by now that professional wrestling is a sham. Viewers long ago gave up the idea that it was for real. Actors pretend to be wrestlers and it doesn't take much skill. The only real aspect is that someone could actually be hurt.

The fuss has little to do with whether or not professional wrestling is real, but parents and others worry that it's sending bad messages. It's definitely violent, no one can deny that. Recently, professional wrestling is venturing into new territory. It's always targeted racial and ethnic backgrounds, but now there is physical and verbal abuse directed at women in the world of wrestling. This is the part that's bothering many people.

Over the years the male wrestlers have had female companions with them. They are generally women wearing few clothes, showing enhanced body parts, big hair, and too many layers of makeup. A few years ago a pimp-like character entered the ring with a group of female prostitutes. Sometimes these women would perform disparaging acts, shocking many parents.

Even if the children had no idea what was really being portrayed, many adults believed that shows with children in the audience should take more responsibility for the content. Before long wrestling was banned in a lot of homes. Parents have been wondering why the already violent sport featuring people with wild names, changed into something even worse. They decided that their children shouldn't be exposed to this behavior.

Another issue that came up was that wrestling was on television in the early afternoon, when many children were home alone without parent supervision. Parents felt that it should be the responsibility of the television networks to only have controversial shows like wrestling on later in the evening when at the very least parents could either make sure it stays off the TV, or watch it with their kids so they could explain certain aspects of the show.

Even with these issues, wrestling continued to become ever more popular. When major wrestling matches toured the US and Canada, the stadiums would be packed with spectators. Some of these big matches were projected on the big screen in movie theaters. Networks added spin offs and a football league. Wrestling has lost some of its pull recently, but a lot of kids still love to watch it.

Despite the choice of parents, children would continue to love professional wrestling and would continue imitating their favorite wrestler with suitable merchandise. The issue at hand is that parents need to explain it to their children that none of this is real.
