Backgammon Strategy for Beginners

This includes understanding how the board is set up, the games objective, and use of the doubling cube. If you understand the game then you can feel confident while you play which automatically increases your chances of winning.

Another great backgammon strategy is blocking and priming. Backgammon rules for online backgammon and off state that you may not land on a point that contains 2 or more opposing checkers. Therefore, you may block your opponent by placing 2 or more of your own checkers on a point. This is known as a “made point” and your opponent may not land on it. If you are behind in a game of backgammon, do not despair. The backgame strategy is perfect for players that are already behind and want to get ahead. A backgame is created by building 2 or more made points in your opponent’s homeboard. This can allow you to prevent your opponent from reaching all of his 15 checkers to his homeboard and also puts you at a great vantage point to hit your opponent. This buys you time so that you can get the rest of your own checkers around the board.

If you plan to take part in some serious backgammon gambling then you should also learn a bit about pip count. Pip count is the total number of die pips that you will have to roll, or points you will have to move, in order to bear all of your checkers off the board. By figuring out who is ahead in the pip count you can effectively build your game strategy. If you are far ahead in the pip count you may consider making more careful moves to protect yourself. If you are far behind you may want to work on your backgame.
